On This Day…June 17

On this day in 1631 Mughal Empress Mumtaz Mahal died in childbirth. Devastated by her death, her husband, Emporer Shah Jahan I, spends the next 20 years building the most magnificent tomb for her, naming it the Taj Mahal which is Persian for Crown of Palaces. In-fact Mumtaz Mahal’s real name was Arjumand Banu Begum, but Shah Jhan I loved her so deeply that he bestowed upon her the name Mumtaz Mahal meaning “Jewel of the Palace”.
