Did You Know…Percy Bysshe Shelley

In a time when fathers held almost complete parental rights in the eyes of the law, English author Percy Bysshe Shelly, husband of “Frankenstein” author Mary Shelly, was one of the first fathers in English history to lose custody of his children. The children from his first marriage were given to the care of foster parents not due to Shelly’s abandonment of his pregnant wife Harriet and their 1 year old daughter for Mary, but because of his atheistic beliefs and sexual freedom. The judge was concerned that the children would learn these traits from their father and couldn’t allow such thought or actions to be passed on.
